Make the Yuletide Gay: “Winning in a Landslide” by JM Cartwright

Guest Blog by JM Cartwright

Sheriff Grissom has just won re-election, but the campaign got nasty. Johnny and
Grissom are at odds with each other, the reality of their world sinking in for both men.
Johnny’s frustrated and Grissom’s patience is stretched to the limit.

Johnny’s come to understand exactly what their relationship could cost Grissom, and he’s having second thoughts. But the two men have established a family, and a life together – a good life, despite their differences. Plus, it’s almost Christmas – and they’re breaking in a new housekeeper. How will she like working for two daddies?

Can they really make it work in small-town USA? Join the boys from A Change
of Tune and find out.

Hey, y’all – so excited to be joining Keira here at her blog. This December is just flying by, and now we’re a couple days from Christmas. I love this time of year, when I can light a fire, listen to it crackle and pop, and play my favorite Christmas mix on the iPod. It’s great writing weather, too!

I have a sense that our winters are going to be quite snowy for the next few years, so I’m glad I’ve got plenty of wood stacked in the garage — and plenty of really good red wine upstairs. The dogs are lying around snoozing, and I’m going to cue up Christmas in Connecticut very soon.  8-)

I’ve got a book that’s just been released by Torquere Press called Winning In a Landslide. It’s a short-story sequel to A Change of Tune, which was released last year. I’ve gotten repeated requests to bring Johnny and Grissom back, and happily announce their return in Landslide. I’m giving away a free copy of the book! Comment on my posting today and you’ll be entered into a random drawing for Landslide. Good luck!

I think you’ll enjoy this visit back to West Virginia. Johnny and Grissom are at their snappy best as they figure out what’s most important in life. They meet some new, interesting folks, and you’ll see some characters from last time dropping in.

Celebrate Christmas with Landslide — and spread the message of the season with family and friends. The closer we get to Christmas, the more we need to remember that peace on earth and good will toward men are not just phrases for a greeting card. We can make a difference — together.

Merry Christmas!

Make the Yuletide Gay: “Hosting for the Holidays” by Jaxx Steele

Guest Blog by Jaxx Steele

Hector had chosen Christmas time for his young lover, Chad, to meet his best friends for the first time. Christmas Eve dinner went well and Chad felt he had made a group of new friends. To celebrate New Year’s Eve Chad made special plans for him and Hector, but will the impromptu appearance by their friends threatened to ruin his big surprise?

Greetings readers!

Jaxx Steele is here wishing you happy holidays and to share with you my love for older men! Of my 3 Christmas stories available for your reading pleasure, this blog will focus on Hosting for the Holidays, which is available tomorrow, December 23.

I have always adored older men. You know the ones I’m talking about. The men that are aging like fine wine. Getting sexier as time passes. The Sean Connerys, Mark Harmons, Samuel Jacksons, Denzel Washingtons, Antonio Banderases and one of my favorites, the late Ricardo Montalbans of the world.

Disclaimer: These are the personal opinions of Jaxx Steele and not necessarily shared by the good people at Make the Yuletide Gay!

There! Now, that the legalities have been observed…. The physical beauty of a young man is surely one of his prize possessions. I mean, who doesn’t walk along the beach just to see those lovely hard bodies, burned to a golden glow by the sun, glistening with a sheen of perspiration, flexing beautifully in the bright July heat?

0-0 *ahem* Sorry about that. I got lost in the visual of all that and lost my train of thought.

Now where was I? Oh yes…as I was saying. That’s all good, but it takes more than a pretty face, doesn’t it? I am not trying to bash younger men, but if physical beauty fades with time and that’s all you have, well…

An older man who is healthy in mind and conscious of his physical health can be just as visually beautiful! Father Time has been kind to his body because he remains active. He may not possess that six pack he used to at twenty five, but as he hovers around fifty he is in good shape and shows appreciation for your six pack! And Lordy! Let’s not forget there are still a few out there who do have the body they had at twenty five! He appreciates the days he has and lives them to the fullest. His graying hair looks distinguished on him and ups his sexiness tenfold.

I also love the fact that he is confident about who he is. Educated, intelligent and worldly is a major turn on! He has no problem teaching you what he knows and welcomes the challenge of learning new things from you. Ahhh, yes, what can I say? I love them.

Hosting for the Holidays starts at Christmas and ends on New Year’s night. It is a May-December romance that shows love and compatibility can happen no matter what your age is. Here’s a peek. Enjoy!

Excerpt

Chad smiled. “Well, you can start taking these bowls out to the table. I thought since it would be so many of us we could eat family style.”

“An excellent idea, Chad. You are as smart as you are handsome,” he praised taking the bowl. Hector gave him another kiss before exiting the kitchen.

Moments later the table displayed large bowls of mashed sweet potatoes, green beans, glazed carrots and a platter of ham. Hector gave Chad a hug around the shoulder as he looked upon it.

“Beautiful,” he murmured then looked up at the sound of the door bell. Chad turned wide eyes filled with panic to him, but Hector greeted it with a bright smile.

“Let’s get this party started!” he said and pulled Chad toward the door.

****

For a while the only thing that could be heard was the murmurs of consuming food and the soft thud of glasses being lifted and returned to the covered table. Chad eyes glanced around at the couples and hoped no one was just eating the food so he wouldn’t feel bad. He muffled a sigh and turned back to his plate.

“The table looks absolutely beautiful, Chad. I feel like I should be photographing it for my students,” one of the guests said on a laugh.

Chad hadn’t realized he was holding his breath until he exhaled with relief.

“Thank you, Dominic,” he said beaming. “Hector told me that you were a photography teacher at the college? Do you like it?”

“I love it. The good thing about teaching an elective is that your students want to be there,” he explained with a laugh pointing his fork toward him.

Chad chuckled. “Yes, I know that very well.”

When Chad glanced around the table again most of the food was gone and the faces of his guests looked satisfied and happy. Hector’s hand suddenly brushed across his thigh making him jump. It moved slowly his fingers grazed the inside of Chad’s leg moving higher to grope across is growing erection. A tremor of sensation ran up and down his spine causing him to gasp.

“Excellent meal, Chad. You really have a gift,” Spencer said leaning back in his chair rubbing his belly.

Chad was slow to respond. He was afraid if he spoke too soon moans would escape instead of words. After a few deep breaths he looked down the table with his best smile in place.

“Thanks Spencer. I’m actually in school to be a chef. One day I’d like to have my own restaurant.”

“A chef! I knew there was no way Hector helped with the food,” Marvin said at the end of the table.

“Hey! I recent that. I did so help,” Hector said.

The look on Marvin’s face said he didn’t believe him. He leaned across the table and pointed accusingly at him.

“Come on, man. You can’t make a peanut butter and jelly taste good,” Marvin said told him with a laughing grin. “What did you do? Bring the plates to the table?”

The men raised their voices in laughter.

“Hey, that’s still helping,” Hector said unable to hold back his own laughter.

“Well, I’ll tell you what, I will definitely be at Chad’s restaurant if he’s doing the cooking,” Spencer promised raising in glass in a mock toast. “You can take that to the bank,” he added with a boisterous voice.

“Thanks, Spencer. You know I may hold you to that,” Chad said playfully.

“I think we all will, Chad. Dinner was wonderful,” Bradley added from the opposite side of him. “You’ve done well with young Chad here, Hector.”

Hector leaned over and gave Chad’s cock a squeeze. “Yeah, I know. I’m very lucky.”

“Absolutely, Brad. I agree. Chad is handsome, intelligent and gifted in the kitchen,” Tim chimed in.

“Bet that’s not the only talent he has, eh, Hector?” Brad announced in his loud voice as he beat the table.

Once again the laughter rose around the table and the heat rose on Chad’s cheeks.

“It seems we have taken a shine to you, Chad,” Marvin said raising his glass. “What do you think of Chad, hon?”

Richie held his finger up as he chewed the last piece of ham on his plate then washed it down with his drink. “I am in total agreement with you guys. Do you like sports, Chad?”

“Uh, yeah. I like basketball.”

“My job gives us a few tickets to all the basketball and the football home games to build moral. Dominic, Tim and I usually go when we can. You can come hang with us if you want when we go again.”

Chad’s shock showed on his face. “Yeah, that would be great. Thanks, Richie.”

Richie waved away his thanks then lifted his drink again. “I think we can be good friends…and I won’t even hold your choice of companionship against you.”

Friendly laughter erupted along the table at Hector’s expense. Chad joined in. It pleased him to see amusement in Hector’s eyes when he looked down the table at his friends. He felt more relaxed and was glad that Hector’s friends were making an effort to befriend him.

“Ha, ha, ha, very funny. I’m sure you guys have only just begun to bend my sweet Chad’s ear with your individual stories of something crazy that I have done. Why don’t I just get us another bottle of wine so that the roasting can commence,” Hector said good naturedly.

“Yeah, why don’t you just do that,” Spencer said giving him the thumbs up.

“Best idea he’s had in a long time, I’d say,” Brad added.

“And make it quick, too!” came Tim’s taunt and the laughter resumed.

Hector chuckled then leaned over to kiss Chad firmly on the mouth.

“Don’t believe a word they say,” he whispered loud enough for his friends to hear.

“Aww, don’t be telling him that, amigo,” Dominic called out as Hector moved toward the swinging kitchen door. “You better believe everything we say, Chad. We know all his secrets…especial the stuff he would rather forget,” he added with a wink.

“You do, huh? Well, I’m all ears guys,” Chad said with a grin.

Make the Yuletide Gay: “Secret Light” by Z.A. Maxfield

Guest Blog by Z.A. Maxfield

Rafe Colman likes his life. He has a nice home, a good job, and a wonderful dog. But he’s exhausted by living a lie. When his home is vandalized because of his perceived German ancestry, he can’t even share the irony with friends.

Officer Ben Morgan falls for Rafe’s dog first, but it isn’t long before he’s giving her owner the eye. He thinks they have more in common than the search for Rafe’s vandals, and he’s willing to taking a chance and find out.

If life in 1955 is tough on a cop in the closet, it’s even tougher on a refugee who’s desperate to hide his roots and fit in. Rafe knows from tragic experience how vicious prejudice can be. Every second with Ben is stolen, every kiss fraught with danger.

When Ben’s partner threatens to ruin everything, Rafe and Ben have to fight to protect what they have, in Secret Light

Here are my favorite cookie recipes. They come from Gourmet Magazine’s December 1995 issue, and I’m reprinting it here from Epicurious.com, the website I use most for finding recipes. The basic butter cookie dough makes three pounds of dough, which I use to make two different kinds of cookies: Raspberry Hazelnut cookies, (like tiny Linzer Tortes) and Mocha Butter Balls.

Basic Butter Cookie Dough
Gourmet | December 1995

This recipe is used to make:
Raspberry Hazelnut Triangles
Mocha Butter Balls

Can be prepared in 45 minutes or less.
Yield: Makes about 3 pounds dough

Ingredients:

4 sticks (1 pound) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/3 cups sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
3 large egg yolks
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 2/3 cups all-purpose flour

In large bowl of a standing electric mixer beat together butter, sugar, and salt until light and fluffy. Beat in yolks, 1 at a time, and vanilla and beat until smooth. Beat in flour gradually, beating dough until just combined well.

Mocha Butter Balls
Gourmet | December 1995

These cookies are rolled in confectioners’ sugar while warm, which gives them a thin buttery frosting.

Yield: Makes about 6 dozen cookies

Ingredients:

1/2 prepared Basic Butter Cookie Dough at room temperature
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (not Dutch process)
2 teaspoons instant espresso powder
1 cup finely chopped walnuts or pecans, if desired
about 2 cups confectioners’ sugar

Preheat oven to 350°F.

In bowl of a standing electric mixer beat together all ingredients except confectioners’ sugar until just combined well.

Form dough into 1-inch balls and arrange about 3/4 inch apart on baking sheets.

Bake cookies in batches in middle of oven until just firm and beginning to brown, about 18 minutes, and cool on baking sheets 5 minutes.

Sift confectioners’ sugar into a bowl. After the 5 minutes cooling, toss balls, a few at a time, in confectioners’ sugar, coating them well and transferring them as coated to trays to cool completely. (Before balls are stored or frozen, they can be coated lightly again in confectioners’ sugar to keep them from sticking to each other.) Cookies may be stored between layers of wax paper in airtight containers up to 6 weeks frozen.

Print recipe

Raspberry Hazelnut Triangles
Gourmet | December 1995

These cookies are like bite-size Linzertortes. Instead of being cut into triangles as suggested below, the dough can be cut into whatever other shape is preferred.

Yield: Makes about 8 dozen cookies

Ingredients:

1/2 prepared Basic Butter Cookie Dough
1/3 cup seedless raspberry jam
1/2 cup finely chopped hazelnuts

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Roll out dough between sheets of wax paper into an approximately 14-inch square, about 1/8 inch thick, and remove top sheet of paper. Spread dough with jam and sprinkle with nuts.

With a long-bladed knife cut dough into 2-inch squares and halve each square diagonally to form triangles. If dough becomes too soft to work with, transfer it on wax paper to a baking sheet and freeze or chill until firm.

Arrange triangles 1/2 inch apart on baking sheets and bake in batches in middle of oven until pale golden, about 12 minutes. Cool cookies on baking sheets 5 minutes and transfer to racks to cool completely. Cookies may be stored between layers of wax paper in airtight containers up to 6 weeks frozen.

Make the Yuletide Gay: “Take Me Home” by Sloan Parker

Guest Blog by Sloan Parker

A friends-to-lovers holiday story

Aspiring television writer Evan Walker has been in love with his best friend since high school, but Kyle doesn’t do boyfriends. Never has. Never will. Evan knows it’s a bad idea to give in to desire when he wants more than a friend with benefits. He has a new dream job. Now all he needs is the dream partner.

Kyle Bennett is a mystery novelist with a severe case of writer’s block. He needs a change. He has three days on their cross-country train trip home for the holidays to figure out how to tell Evan he’s staying there for good. He also has to write the overdue pages for his editor. Only, he’s a little too distracted by the close quarters in their sleeper compartment—and Evan’s ass—to get much done.

The sparks that fly between them are hotter than ever. Good thing they have a real-life mystery to focus on: why people all around them, including Evan’s new boss, want to get their hands on a journal that once belonged to Kyle’s grandfather.

When a blizzard traps them in the mountains, Kyle and Evan steam up the train’s windows and must finally face their true desires.

Excerpt

“Wow.” Kyle flipped through the tickets for their connecting train in Chicago that would take them on to Ohio and the ones for the trip back to California. Did he notice they only had the one room? It seemed silly for them not to share. And the tickets weren’t cheap. “This is great, Ev. Thank you.” Kyle looked…relaxed, happy. Not stressed like when Evan had walked in earlier.

Now wasn’t the right time to ask him about the journal. It could wait. At least until Kyle started writing again. At least until he finished the five chapters he needed to send to his editor. Hastings expected an answer by the first of the year. That was two weeks away.

Kyle was examining the map in more detail. Evan reached for his tickets. While Kyle wrote, he could work on the script ideas he wanted to pitch to the writers’ room after he’d gotten his feet wet. That was if he still had the job.

“This is really cool, Ev.”

That had Evan smiling. He wouldn’t let Hastings or the uncertainty of his future ruin their trip.

“Hey.” Kyle faced him and leaned his arm on the back of the couch, resting his temple against his closed fist. “You’re doing a lot more smiling today than you have in a long time.”

“It’s almost Christmas.”

“It is.” Kyle’s eyes crinkled up at the corners as his smile widened. “And you’ve been a good boy?”

Evan loved this playful side of Kyle. He hadn’t been like this when Evan had first moved in. It was like Kyle was worried Evan was too fragile. And that pissed him off. So he’d gotten dumped by the person he thought he was going to spend his life with. People got over that. Didn’t they? He wasn’t the same weak kid who’d been used and rejected over and over.

Then what was he so afraid would happen if he and Kyle gave in and slept together?

He folded the brochure, needing to do something with his hands. “I have been very, very good.”

“Yeah, you have.” Kyle’s voice was lower, deeper, sexier than a moment before, if that was possible. “What do you think good boys get in their stockings?”

“Um…” Evan sat back and pressed his index finger to his lips. “Porn. Really, really good porn.”

Kyle huffed out a laugh. “That can be arranged.”

“Well, you’re the expert.”

It was an old joke from college. They’d had a fight one night when Evan had told Kyle he was sleeping around so much he might as well have done porn and gotten paid for it. Kyle hadn’t been offended. He’d turned it into a joke, one they revisited from time to time.

Kyle said, “You just want me to teach you the industry secrets.”

“Ha. What secrets do you know that I don’t?”

Kyle slowly leaned in until his chest touched Evan’s shoulder and their mouths almost came together. Evan’s breath caught in a rush. In an instant, he was back in that motel room, Kyle on top of him, Kyle’s mouth on his.

“It’s not something I can tell you,” Kyle said. “You have to experience it.” He licked his lower lip in an exaggerated move.

Evan could not stop watching that mouth, the moisture left behind by the swipe of Kyle’s tongue. He wanted to lean in and follow the action with his own tongue. His breathing picked up, and his cock responded. The intense way Kyle watched him was unnerving. Like Evan was the only opportunity he’d had to fuck anyone in weeks.

Which was odd. Kyle had never experienced a lack in that department. How long had it been since he’d hooked up with anyone? Without a thought on what he was doing, Evan raised his hand and ran his thumb over Kyle’s lower lip liked he’d done in Miguel’s office earlier.

No shocked reaction this time. Instead, Kyle drew his eyebrows up in a questioning stare. “Frosting?”

Evan couldn’t speak. He shook his head. He longed to shove Kyle backward, straddle him, and kiss him with a fierceness–a possessiveness–that scared Evan in its intensity. He wanted to grind their bodies together, press Kyle into the couch, until they were panting and writhing, until they came so hard they’d be unable to move. They’d fall asleep right there, his body draped over Kyle’s.

Just kiss him.

No. It would never be just a kiss. Just another fuck. Not for Evan. He’d probably end up confessing what he felt for Kyle. Then what? How awkward and fucked-up would their friendship get after that?

“I can’t.” He dropped his hand.

“It’s okay, Ev.” Kyle eased back to his former location on the couch. He focused on the tickets again. “Thanks for this. I think it’ll help.”

“You’re welcome.” Evan squeezed his eyes shut and sucked in a deep breath. He opened his eyes and nudged Kyle’s shoulder with his own. “It’ll be fun. Our last trip before you move.”

Kyle started to say something, but Evan turned away. He didn’t want to hear anything more about Kyle leaving California. Didn’t want to think about what it would be like not to see each other all the time, not to hang out together.

He stood and picked up his plate. “I’m going for a run. I’ll let you get more staring at your computer done.”

“Thanks.” The frustrated expression was back as Kyle rested his head on the couch behind him and stared at the ceiling.

“You’ll come up with some great stuff on the train. You’ll see.”

There was that serious, intense look again as Kyle glanced at him. Could there be something to it? Something more than desire? Evan left the room before he did something stupid and asked what it meant. He headed down the hall to Kyle’s spare bedroom, closed the door, and leaned against it.

Why had he touched Kyle again?

Because a part of him would always love Kyle, would always imagine what it would be like to have all of him.

He pushed away from the door and undressed. He was not going there again. He slipped on his shorts and T-shirt, headed into the hall, and stopped at the apartment door. “I’ll be back in an hour.” When Kyle didn’t say anything, Evan faced him.

Kyle was staring at Evan’s crotch, breathing hard, his mouth hanging open. Had he been checking out his ass? He finally lifted his head and met Evan’s stare. Those serious dark eyes did shit to his willpower.

There was no denying it. He could have Kyle if he wanted. For one night.

He turned away and fumbled with the door handle, then left the apartment before he lost all reason.

Make the Yuletide Gay: “Teaching Topaz” by Tory Temple

Guest Blog by Tory Temple

Hi everyone! I’m Tory, and Keira asked me to write up a little post even though I don’t have a holiday release, and I was more than glad to do so. I’m right there in the swing of things with the mad shopping, baking, and wrapping. My family celebrates Hanukkah, my sister-in-law’s family celebrates Christmas, so we’re all together on Christmas Eve this year with menorah lighting and present opening. I’m looking forward to it. As long as I get all the presents wrapped, of course.

Anyway, my contribution to Christmas/Hanukkah dinner this year is the traditional latkes – potato pancakes. Hanukkah foods are often fried in oil to remind us of the miracle of the holiday. Here is my recipe, sort of adapted from Martha Stewart:

4 large russet potatoes, peeled
1 small white onion, finely grated
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon coarse salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Vegetable oil, for frying

Applesauce – optional
Sour cream – optional

1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Shred potatoes using the large holes of a box grater into a large bowl of ice water. Alternatively, place half the potatoes in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the shredding disk attachment and process until shredded. Repeat process with remaining potatoes; transfer to a large bowl of ice water. Using a strainer or slotted spoon, transfer potatoes, reserving liquid, to another large bowl lined with a clean kitchen towel; gently squeeze dry.

2. Set reserved liquid aside for 10 minutes to allow starch to sink to the bottom; carefully pour liquid from the bowl, reserving milky residue (potato starch), and discard. Transfer potatoes back to bowl with potato starch.

3. Add onions to bowl; stir in eggs, flour, salt, and pepper.

4. Line a baking sheet with paper towels; set aside. In a heavy nonstick skillet, heat 1/4-inch of oil. Spoon scant 1/2 cup of potato mixture per pancake into skillet, working in batches and taking care not to crowd the skillet.

5. Fry on both sides until golden brown, 4 to 6 minutes. Transfer to prepared baking sheet to drain; transfer to oven to keep warm. Repeat process with remaining potato mixture. Serve hot with applesauce, or sour cream and caviar, if desired.

Serves 4 to 6

Do you have a favorite holiday recipe? Or another latke recipe I MUST try? You can put it in the comments, or just tell me your favorite holiday food. I’ll give away a copy of my newest release, Teaching Topaz, available now from Torquere Press. I’ll pick a winner by Monday morning, 9:00 am Pacific Standard Time. Happy holidays, readers!

Make the Yuletide Gay: “The Santa Problem” by Tam Ames

Guest Blog by Tam Ames

The Santa Problem

Lane would do most anything to make his live-in love Gavin happy, but this is taking things too far. Just because Gavin can’t find someone to play Santa at his office building, doesn’t mean it’s Lane’s problem too. But Gavin can be very persuasive when he wants his way, and Lane may be taking on more than he can handle in order to keep his man content.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone. I would like to first thank Keira for hosting us all here and I’m happy to be jumping in the pool with all of the other great authors with stories this holiday season.

In my story, you will meet Lane and Gavin. Lane is not a Christmas fan. He doesn’t dislike it, but it’s not a big deal. It means extra tips at work as he’s a bartender, and we all know Christmas parties are great for the service industry, but it also means more stupid drunks he has to deal with. And his relationship with his family is rocky at best, so it’s just another holiday he has to get through.

Gavin however, ADORES Christmas. He’s the one who decorates the tree, bakes cookies and plays Christmas music all the time. So since my story deals with Santa, I thought, “What Santa songs would Lane and Gavin enjoy?” Gavin’s was easy. I knew “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt would be his favourite. I can imagine him crooning around the apartment doing his best sulty Eartha impression. Lane was a bit more difficult, but I think his choice would be “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” by Alice Cooper. :-)

You can compare the two and let me know which one you prefer in the comments for the chance to win a copy of The Santa Problem.  Be sure to leave a way for me to find you if you win. Hope you all were just a little naughty this year, as it makes life so much more fun that way. Have a great holiday.

I can be found at Tam’s Reads or at Goodreads and on Twitter.

Make the Yuletide Gay: “Christmas Memories” by Matthew Lang

Guest Blog by Matthew Lang

Jake and Nathaniel found their happily ever after in The Secret of Talmor Manor. The problem is that afters come with their own set of problems. How exactly do you navigate the minefield of a family Christmas and a new relationship without explaining you met in a dream—or that the dream included a crazy sister and her lover hell bent on killing you both? Is it better or worse when the reincarnated person you’re with differs oh so slightly from the man you fell in love with? After a year of paranormal, is a little slice of normal too much to ask?

Here’s a favorite cookie recipe to enjoy this holiday season!

Fresh Ginger Cookies

Ingredients:

3 cups self-raising flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
125 grams butter (unsalted)
2 large eggs (US Extra Large)
Half teaspoon five spice powder
1 generous thumb of fresh ginger (approx 1 inch)

Preheat the oven to 160°C / 325°F; fan forced oven for preference. Line three baking sheets with baking paper. Melt butter in saucepan/microwave and set aside to cool.

Sift flour, five spice and baking powder into a large bowl. Add sugar. Peel the ginger (scraping with a teaspoon works well), and finely grate it into the flour mix. Create a well in the flour and add the egg and then pour in the melted butter.

Mix into a soft dough using your hands. Shape dough into 20 to 30 balls depending on desired size and space well apart on the baking sheets—use the back of a fork to flatten the balls slightly (and create that nice pattern of professional looking cookie ridges).

Bake for 10-15 minutes until light golden in colour. Leave to cool on trays to firm up before transferring to a wire rack to cool.

Eat warm for preference.

Make the Yuletide Gay: “One Kiss” by Silvia Violet

 Guest Blog by Silvia Violet

One Kiss is about love that lasts and second chances. It is also about the warmth of Christmas traditions and food. One of my own Christmas traditions that I put into the story is making cookie baskets for friends and neighbors, so before I share an excerpt from One Kiss, I want to share one of my favorite cookie recipes. Every year, my daughters and I try several new recipes, but this cookie gets made year after year.

Oatmeal Hershey Bar Cookies

(This recipe makes 10-12 dozen cookies so I usually halve it.)

2 c. Butter (4 sticks)
2 c. Sugar
2 c. Brown Sugar
4 Eggs
2 t. Vanilla
4 c. Flour
5 c. Oatmeal, ground into powder (I do this in the food processor)
1 t. Salt
2 t. Baking Powder
2 t. Baking Soda
2 c. Chopped Pecans
3 cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
12 Hershey Bars (the plain milk chocolate ones that are divided into 12 pieces)

Preheat oven to 375F.

Cream butter and both sugars.  Add eggs and vanilla and blend until creamy.  Add flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder and baking soda.  Blend just until combined.  Add pecans and chocolate chips and blend on the mixer’s lowest setting. (If I make a full batch, it overflows from my mixer and I have to do the chips and pecans by hand.)

Drop by tablespoons onto a parchment lined cookie sheet.  Bake 6-8 minutes.  The cookies will be soft and will not look done when you take them out.  The edges may have just a hint of brown. Do not overbake!

Before removing them from the pan, top each cookie with one section of a Hershey bar.  After about 2 minutes, remove them from the pan and let cool. The chocolate will remain gooey and soft for a long time.

One Kiss by Silvia Violet

Jake Sanders comes home for Christmas after a dreary semester filled with sleepless nights and a cheating boyfriend. Finding a new man is the last thing on his mind until he discovers that Ben Swinburne now owns the bakery where they both worked.

Five years ago, Jake and Ben shared a single kiss, and Jake has never forgotten the way Ben’s lips felt against his. When Ben catches Jake under the mistletoe, passion ignites between them. This time around, Ben wants more than one kiss, but Jake isn’t sure he’s ready for another relationship. Can Jake move past his pain and open his heart, or will he miss out on a second chance with the man of his dreams?

Excerpt

When I pulled into my parents’ driveway, I couldn’t help but smile at the crazy colored lights snaking along the roofline, outlining every window, and circling the porch columns. Strands of glittery reindeer lights covered the azaleas lining the front of the house, and bells tinkled in the breeze.

My mom loved Christmas, and every year she sent my dad outside on the day after Thanksgiving with string after string of lights, admonishing him to cover every available space with them. I noted that this year, a bevy of penguins had joined the animatronic reindeer and polar bears on the lawn. I could imagine my dad shaking his head as he set them out. But making my mother happy made him happy. So no matter how much he grumbled about the decorations, he always did his best to turn our home into a winter wonderland.

It was good to be home. I’d been avoiding my family, using the excuse of my tough as hell Vet school schedule, but really I’d been depressed ever since I got dumped by my cheating bastard of a boyfriend a few months ago. I wasn’t good company for anyone.

I grabbed my duffle bag and my laptop from the backseat and headed to the door smiling as one of the penguins greeted me with “Merry Christmas from Winterville”.

“Mom! I’m home!” I called as I pushed the door open.

“Jake!” She rushed from the kitchen wearing one of her Christmas aprons. This one was an appalling shade of green with little Santas all over it. She raced down the hall, and I gathered her up in a tight hug. Yep, it was good to be home.

I took a deep breath, drinking in the wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. “Chicken and dumplings?”

My mom smiled. “You know I always make your favorites when you come home.”

I gave her a kiss. “Thanks mom. Did you make chocolate cake too?”

She laughed. “That’s your sister’s treat, not that you won’t eat your share.”

“When will Lauren be here?” My sister and I had always been close and I regretted not calling her more in the last few months.

“Not for a few hours. Come on and put your things in your room.” My mom started up the stairs, and I followed, grinning at the greenery that circled the railing and imagining my dad complaining about the whole damn house smelling like a pine forest.

I slung my duffle bag on my old bed and set up my laptop as mom chattered about old friends of mine who’d gotten married and former teachers who’d retired and other local tidbits. I was about to inquire about our plans for the next few days when she said, “You’ll never guess who bought Highland Bakery a few months ago.”

My heart sped up as it always did when I thought about the bakery. Remembering the years I’d worked there meant thinking about Ben, my high school crush. He was six years older than me, and he refused to go out with me until I graduated. I’d counted the days waiting for my fantasies to come true. Then a few months before graduation he told me he’d finally saved up enough money for chef school. I was thrilled for him until I found out he’d be moving. We shared one amazing kiss that night. Just one kiss, but I’ve never forgotten the feel of his lips on mine.

“Marsha sold the place?” I asked as I untangled my laptop cord.

“I told you she was thinking about retiring.”

My heart beat even faster when I turned and saw that my mom had a look like she was up to something. “Who bought it?”

“Ben Swinburne.”

I had to force myself to swallow before I could respond. “Really?”

She smiled slyly. “Yes. He’d been working as a pastry chef at a restaurant in Atlanta, but he wanted his own place.

I nodded. “He dreamed about that back when I knew him.” Lusted after him. Dreamed about him.

“You should go see him. You’ve got plenty of time before Lauren gets here.”

My heart pounded so hard I wondered if it could bruise my ribs. What was wrong with me? I hadn’t seen Ben in over five years, but the thought of him still made me feel like a confused eighteen-year-old.

Make the Yuletide Gay: “Surrender Love” by Kayelle Allen

Note: Kayelle doesn’t have a holiday release, but loves Christmas and wanted to be a part of making the Yuletide gay!

Guest Blog by Kayelle Allen

Surrender Love

Not rebound, payback, loneliness, or great sex, and far beyond love. This is surrender.

In the beds of countless lovers, the immortal Luc Saint-Cyr has been mastered as well as master, commanded as well as commander. When his mortal lover leaves him, the distraught Luc withdraws and devotes himself to work. His entertainment company throws a ceremony for their most successful rock group, and Luc meets drummer Izzorah “Rah” Ceeow, one of the feline Kin race. Rah’s dark hair and velvety, golden furskin captivate Luc. Pert cat’s ears and a quick smile lighten his mood, and one look into Rah’s emerald eyes, deep and tranquil as a forest pool, and troubles cease.

He suspects the mid-twenties male is a virgin, and Luc, fascinated by Rah’s quiet serenity and lack of guile, longs for a deeper, closer relationship. Savoring Rah’s surrender will be as delicious as taking him. Luc will force nothing. Rah will give himself to Luc when he is ready to surrender his innocence, to capitulate every part of himself to Luc’s command. Rah will open himself and let himself be taken. Luc’s anticipation and desire are palpable; as real as his hunger for faithful, unconditional love. But to gain Rah, how much of himself is Luc willing to surrender?

Heat Level: R=graphic sex, plus extreme cuddling, tenderness, and the seduction of a virgin who knows exactly what he wants.

Christmas Recipe: Orange Candy Cake

This moist, yummy cake is best eaten in small pieces. It is as different from fruit cake as you can get and still have fruit in a cake. Warning: this is extremely rich!

1 lb orange candy slices, chopped
1 lb dates, pitted and chopped
3 1/2 c all purpose flour (note: if using self-rising flour, omit baking soda)
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt (optional)
2 c pecans, chopped
1 c flaked coconut
1 c butter
2 c sugar
4 eggs
1/2 c milk

Orange Glaze Frosting
2 c powdered sugar
1 c orange juice
Whipped cream (optional)

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Combine flour, soda, and salt.
3. In a large bowl, stir together the candy slices, dates, pecans, and coconut. Sprinkle with 1 c of the flour mixture and stir to coat.
4. In a small bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at time, mixing thoroughly after each addition.
5. Fold butter/sugar/egg mixture into the candy mixture. Drizzle with the milk, alternating portions of flour mixture, until all is combined. Mixture will be chunky and thick.
6. Grease a bundt or tube pan well. Spoon cake into pan, and place in center of oven.
7. Bake 90 minutes. Test by inserting a toothpick in thickest portion; pick should come out clean. Time varies depending on the thickness and shape of the pan. Allow more time if needed, up to two hours. Always test at shortest time first, and add time accordingly.
8. While cake is baking, mix the glaze and allow to thicken as sugar melts.
9. Do not remove cake from pan. Allow to cool one half hour, then pour glaze over cake, and chill overnight in the pan.

To serve, slide a knife around edges of cake to loosen from sides, then invert on a serving plate and garnish with whipped cream if desired. Serves 16. Refrigerate leftovers.
